Cairo is the capital city of Egypt and is also the most populous in the country. It is also the continent’s largest city. The name Cairo can mean the Vanquisher or the Triumphant. This speaks to the way that the city was founded and how the city was briefly ruled by some of the world’s fiercest conquerors, including Napoleon for a short time. Cairo did not earn complete independence from British rule until 1952.
There are about 7.7 million people that live in the city of Cairo, with more than 17 million people living in the greater metropolitan areas. This is what makes Ciaro the largest city on the continent of Africa, and 16th in the world in terms of population.
