Memphis Transportation

Memphis Tennessee Transportation - Memphis, the city of Graceland, and the home of the blues, is one of the most “American” cities in America. It has brought us some of the greatest names in Rock n’ Roll and soul music. Memphis has a cultural diversity and a musical art history that keeps visitors coming back generation after generation.

The major airport for Memphis is the Memphis International Airport. This airport is about 11 miles from downtown Memphis. An Airport Shuttle Service is available between the airport and a number of the major downtown hotels. Additionally, the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) operates buses, however they aren’t very convenient as they only run every 1 to 2 hours. Taxis are available to downtown Memphis, however they can be rather pricy.

Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) operates citywide bus service. For schedule information, call MATA at 901-274-MATA. Discount rates are available to seniors (with a Medicare card).

Also, the Main Street Trolley runs 1920’s trolley cards and reproductions in a circular route around the downtown area. The fare is very inexpensive and it’s an enjoyable way to get around downtown. There are 20 stations along Main Street.

Memphis Tennessee is a very large city without a subway, so road transportation is needed, however driving in Memphis is not recommended due to traffic congestion. Try to stick to the downtown area, and if there are other parts of the city you would like to see, stick to taxi or bus service.
